Designation based on positive topline data from the ConquerRSV Phase 3 pivotal efficacy trial, which demonstrated vaccine efficacy of 83.7% against RSV lower respiratory tract disease, defined by 2 or more symptoms in older adults CAMBRIDGE, MA / ACCESSWIRE / January 30, 2023 /  Moderna, Inc. (NASDAQ:MRNA), a biotechnology company pioneering messenger RNA (mRNA) therapeutics and vaccines, today announced mRNA-1345, an investigational mRNA vaccine candidate for respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), has been granted Breakthrough Therapy Designation by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the prevention of RSV-associated lower respiratory tract disease (RSV-LRTD) in adults aged 60 years or older. The designation was based on  positive topline data  from the ConquerRSV Phase 3 pivotal efficacy trial. "The FDA's Breakthrough Designation for mRNA-1345 further emphasizes the significant health impact of RSV in older adults and the high unmet need," said Stéphane Bancel, ...

Eggs May Hold the Key to a New COVID-19 Treatment

Image
Multiple studies published in the last two years indicate that eggs from chickens immunized against   SARS-CoV-2   could be used to create effective treatments against   COVID-19   in humans. There is no evidence, however, that this development is responsible for the current egg shortage in the United States, as some conspiracy theories allege. In  a study published  in the Journal of Applied Microbiology March 2022, researchers found that egg  antibodies  (IgYs) produced by chickens immunized against the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein had the ability to neutralize the virus, specifically by interfering with the spike protein’s capacity to attach to human cells. The researchers concluded that IgY targeting the spike protein “could be a promising candidate for pre- and post-exposure prophylaxis or treatment of COVID-19.” They added that “administration of IgY-based oral preparation, oral or nasal spray may have profound implications for blocking SARS-CoV...

PFAS Are in Every Bite of Freshwater-Caught Fish

Image
Once a healthy mainstay of native diets, freshwater fish in the U.S. have been rendered toxic by environmental pollutants. Even eating one fish a year could be dangerous, due to the high levels of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, or PFAS, they contain. The research, conducted by scientists with the Environmental Working Group (EWG), revealed that consuming a single serving of freshwater fish annually equates to a month of drinking water contaminated with PFOS — one type of PFAS — at a concentration of 48 parts per trillion. Given that people in many vulnerable U.S. communities still depend on freshwater fish as a key part of their diets, public health could be at risk. “These test results are breathtaking,” Scott Faber, EWG’s senior vice president for government affairs, said in a news release. “Eating one bass is equivalent to drinking PFOS-tainted water for a month.” 1 Freshwater Fish Turned Toxic For the study, EWG researchers analyzed data from more than 500 f...

Climate Change and Health: Understanding the Impacts on the US Healthcare System

Image
Climate change is a rapidly growing concern that is not only affecting the environment, but also human health. As the planet continues to warm, the impacts of climate change are becoming more severe and widespread. This is particularly true in the United States, where the healthcare system is facing new challenges as a result of this global crisis. In this article, we will explore the ways in which climate change is impacting the US healthcare system and the steps that can be taken to address these challenges. By NASA’s Scientific Visualization Studio, Key and Title by uploader (Eric Fisk) One of the most significant impacts of climate change on human health is the increased frequency and severity of extreme weather events. These events, such as heat waves, droughts, and floods, can lead to a wide range of health problems. For example, heat waves can cause heat stroke, dehydration, and other heat-related illnesses. Droughts can lead to water shortages and the spread of disease. Floods ...
