US Car Sales Estimated to End Year With Nearly 16 Million Units (2024)

More new cars are projected to be sold this year than in 2023, with sales numbers set to rise slightly in 2025 amid an uncertain auto environment, according to S&P Global Mobility. S&P, in a Dec. 19 statement, predicts U.S. auto sales volume to be 15.8 million units this year. This is an increase of more than 2.5 percent from the 15.4 million estimated for 2023. Sales for December are expected to register a “solid finish to close out the year” at 1.45 million units, up from 1.36 million in November. It said electric vehicle (EV) sales could advance in December despite lower inventories because current federal EV incentives may be withdrawn next year. For 2025, S&P calculates new vehicle sales to rise by 1.2 percent to hit 16.18 million units. Next year “brings with it mixed opportunities and uncertainty for the auto industry as a new administration and policy proposals take hold,” said Chris Hopson, a company manager. He said the affordability issues that limited new vehi...

China-based Shenzhen Charmast Technology recalled around 488,000 units of its model W1056 power banks sold in the United States as the lithium-ion battery in these items “can overheat and ignite, posing fire and burn hazards to consumers,” said a Dec. 19 notice from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).
