2. Rapid development of oncology innovation
China has become an important source of new oncology medicines and clinical research. The National Medical Products Administration (NMPA) has established priority and expedited pathways for eligible innovative drugs, including pathways designed to support globally synchronized development and international multicenter clinical trials.
Examples of recent NMPA activity include approval of ciltacabtagene autoleucel for selected adults with relapsed or refractory multiple myeloma and approval of ivonescimab, a bispecific antibody targeting VEGF-A and PD-1, for a specified population with EGFR-mutated locally advanced or metastatic non-small-cell lung cancer after EGFR-TKI progression.
That does not mean every experimental or domestically developed therapy is superior to established standard treatment. It means that China can be an important country to investigate when a patient is looking for a specific approved therapy, clinical trial or specialist opinion.
3. Potential cost advantages
Medical costs in China can be substantially lower than in some Western healthcare systems, particularly for certain procedures, hospital services and medicines. However, availability is highly diagnosis-specific. “Available in China” does not mean “appropriate for you.”
China's Cancer Burden and What It Means for Patients
China has one of the world's largest cancer burdens because of its population size and changing age structure. A 2025 analysis published in the Journal of the National Cancer Center estimated approximately 5.15 million new cancer cases and 2.58 million cancer deaths in China in 2024. Lung cancer was the most commonly diagnosed cancer, followed by thyroid, colorectal, breast and liver cancer.
This burden has an important clinical consequence: some Chinese cancer centers have extensive experience in cancers that are particularly common in East Asia, including lung, liver, gastric, esophageal and nasopharyngeal cancers.

The best hospital for nasopharyngeal carcinoma may not be the best hospital for pancreatic cancer. The best center for proton therapy may not be the best center for complex metastatic surgery. The right choice is disease-specific.

For most cancers, treatment should begin with an accurate diagnosis and a clear understanding of evidence-based standard options. Surgery, radiation, systemic therapy, targeted therapy and immunotherapy may be used alone or in combination depending on the disease.
Experimental treatments should generally be considered in the context of a properly regulated clinical trial or a clearly defined specialist program—not as a substitute for proven treatment simply because it is newer.
Precision Oncology: The Starting Point for Treatment Selection
For an international cancer patient, one of the most important services a Chinese cancer center can provide is not necessarily a new drug. It may be a better characterization of the disease.

Such figures should be interpreted as institution-reported outcomes for a selected treated population, not as a benchmark for all cancers or evidence that particle therapy is automatically superior to conventional radiation.

One of the weakest parts of the original “success rates” approach is the use of simplified country-to-country survival tables.

- Identify the trial phase.
- Read the inclusion and exclusion criteria.
- Identify the primary endpoint.
- Check whether the trial is randomized.
- Determine whether the therapy is already approved for another indication.
- Understand known and expected toxicities.
- Ask who pays for treatment-related complications.
- Find out what happens if the treatment fails.
- Obtain the full informed-consent document.
